Events regarding the initial history of the Independent Libraries

Early history
March 3, 1998
Tunas, Las Tunas. The independent library Félix Varela, the first in the country, is created;. Its founders, Berta Mexidor Vázquez and Ramón Humberto Colás, state that the purpose is “to promote reading not as a mere act of receiving information, but as a way of developing people's free personal opinion, with no censure or obligation to a belief.” In two months the library registered 1,500 members and received 1,000 books.

March 15, 1998
Santiago de Cuba, Santiago de Cuba. The second independent library in the country, called Eduardo René Chibás, is founded. Mirna Riverón Guerrero, activist of the Cuban Party of Orthodox Renovation (Partido Cubano de Renovación Ortodoxa), is appointed Head of the library.


March 20, 1998
Puerto Padre, Las Tunas. The third independent library in the country, named Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo 'El Cucalambé,' is founded. Fajardo was a legendary peasant poet. Eva Facundo González Ricardo is appointed Head


April 7, 1998
Havana City, Havana. The fourth independent library in the country is founded. Miguel Angel García Puñales is appointed Head.


July 10, 1998
Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba. The fifth independent library in the country is created, and is named Paquito Borrero. Rafael Ibañez Isaac is appointed Head.
Santiago de Cuba, Santiago de Cuba. The sixth independent library in the country is founded, Frank País García. Alfredo Dennis Camps is appointed Head.
Santiago de Cuba, Santiago de Cuba. The independent library José Maceo Grajales is founded, the seventh in the country. Xiomara Evelia Blanco is appointed Head.


July 15, 1998
Santiago de Cuba, Santiago de Cuba. The eighth independent library in the country is founded and is named Pedro Luis Boitel. Rolando Bestart Favar is appointed Head.


September 29, 1998
Bayamo, Granma. The ninth independent library in the country is created and is named 20 de Octubre [October 20]. Juvencio Corrales is appointed Head.
Bayamo, Granma. The Independent Library José Antonio Saco is founded, the tenth in the country, with Manuel Jerez as its Head. Fifteen days later, the pro-government newspaper Granma announces the creation of a “community library” in Las Tunas, at the house of one of the members of the so-called Defense of the Revolution Committees [Comités de Defensa de la Revolución] called Noidis Acosta.


November 16, 1998
Niceto Pérez, Guantánamo. The first Independent Library in the Countryside and eleventh in the country is founded, also named after the popular peasant poet Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo 'El Cucalambé.'


November 18, 1998
Herradura, Pinar del Río. The twelfth independent library in the country is founded. Lázaro Raúl González Gómez is appointed Head.


January 16, 1999
Tunas, Las Tunas. The thirteenth independent library in the country is founded under the name José María Heredia, with Jesús de Manuel Infante Rodríguez as its Head.


February 7, 1999
Jobabo, Las Tunas. The fourteenth independent library is founded and is named José Martí. Juan Rufino González García, 40 years old, with a degree in History, founder of the Democratic Solidarity Party [Partido Solidaridad Democrática] in the region, is appointed Head.
Tunas, Las Tunas. The fifteenth independent library is founded, named after the civil rights leader in the United States, Martin Luther King. Angel Cantero Castellanos, 62 years old, with a degree in Social Sciences, who is also delegate of the Democratic Liberal Party [Partido Liberal Democrático] in the province, is appointed Head.


March 3, 1999
Reparto La Victoria, Las Tunas. The sixteenth independent library is founded, the first one specialized in literature for children, under the name of Ismaelillo. Magdelivia Hidalgo González, intermediate accounting technician, correspondent of the Democratic Solidarity Party Press and reporter for the independent news agency Libertad, is appointed Head


June 10, 1999
Vázquez, Las Tunas. The seventeenth independent library is founded and is named Pablo Morales. Juan Téllez Rodríguez, with a degree in Education, specialized in Geography, is appointed Head.
